ID Theft
I thought this advice from the NY Times was really helpful and so I wanted to share it.
Minimizing the Risks
Though no one's identity is safe from theft, consumer groups advise these steps:

Deliciousness
This is one of my favorite things to make as of late. The recipe is made up based on my best guess of the contents of this chicken cart at 40th street and 7th avenue. Well, with ground turkey substituted.
PS- it's really good for those seeking a low-sodium diet.
Turkey Curry a la Schn@pp
Ingredients
1 pound of ground turkey (or cubed soft tofu for you veggies out there)
1 cup white rice uncooked (2 1/2 cups cooked)
2 large tomatoes, diced
1 large green pepper, diced
1 white onion, diced
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup water
mild curry
cumin
olive oil
salt
2 cloves garlic, crushed (optional)
2 carrots, cubed (optional)
Instructions
1. Cook the rice, preferably in a rice cooker
2. Add olive oil to a 2-qt saucepan (enough to cover the bottom), add a dash of salt make sure it doesn't burn. Brown the turkey (or tofu) in the saucepan on high heat.
3. Once turkey is cooked, reduce heat add 1/4 cup of water, and cumin & curry to taste (I usually add about 2 heaping tablespoons of curry and 1 of cumin). Stir well.
4. Turn heat back up and cover saucepan until mixture reaches a simmer.
5. Add peppers and onions, and, if desired, the carrots or garlic. Mix well and recover saucepan.
6. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until peppers and onions are soft. Add tomatoes. Mix well and then simmer for 1 minute.
7. Remove saucepan from heat. In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice, turkey mixture, and raisins. Mix well.
8. Serve with plain yogurt or tofu sour cream as a topping.

Willets Point

This is a cameraphone picture from my visit to Willets Point, Queens today (yes, this is in NYC, and just three blocks from a subway stop). The reason I'm writing about this is that it is a madhouse of auto repair companies. There are about 50-75 companies on one block at the entrance on Roosevelt Ave.
It's such a lively, but trashy place. I wish I could have gotten a picture of the real action of the dudes hawking auto repair jobs at the entrance to the area, but there were so many people looking at me funny that I felt it was probably a bad idea.
The most unique characteristic of the area (besides the density of the auto shops) is visible in the above picture - the city forgot to install sewers or pave the roads. Oops.
Apparently this is the one part of the Corona ash dump that Robert Moses couldn't condemn to make part of the World's Fair complex in either 1939 or 1964.
It's about 64 acres in the triangle between Shea stadium and downtown Flushing.
Now the city is moving forward on plans to condemn the land and turn it into one of the following: conference center, tourist trap, residential shangri-la, etc.

Questions That Plague Me
The current one is:
"Dude, what's the deal with the ASPCA? Are they real cops or what?"
Here is the ASPCA's answer, apparently they're some sort of Peace Officer? So maybe they do have police power. Anyone with info is encouraged to leave an enlightening comment.

jack-of-all-minutiae, master of none
I had the following phone conversation with the sisbot this week:
[conversation recalled to the best of my memory]
R: Hey bro- what was that movie where the guys gave each other a high five by wiggling their fingers together?
M: Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
R: I thought they played air guitar.
M: Yeah they did. That was in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. In the second one, they played air guitar and then did the hand thing as a flourish to the sound to a guitar whammy-bar sound.

"I Pity The Fool" -- TV Land has picked up six episodes of this Dr. Phil- meets-Tony-Robbins reality show in which Mr. T stars in the unlikely role of social scientist traveling across the country to dispense his own classic Mr. T style advice. Whether it's viewers struggling with problems at home or fans seeking tips on gaining professional success, Mr. T becomes immersed in the situation at-hand and becomes a catalyst for change... Is there anything more to possibly say about this that it doesn't say itself?

GTM Fire Pictures

At 9am this morning

at 5:30pm from my roof. The building between Oak, Noble, West, and the river is gone. It was the size of an entire midtown Manhattan block.

GTM En Fuego
Unfortunately, the Greenpoint Terminal Market is in a gigantic fire right now.

We heard some loud explosion in the neighborhood at about 8pm last night, but it was probably unrelated as the fire apparently didn't start until 5am. Sadly, this looks like most of the august complex will go, although when I was there at 9 this morning, the best-preserved buildings between Noble and Milton Streets (on the left behind the bridge in the picture above) didn't seem to be on fire.
What is incredibly interesting is that the current owner of the building also had a suspicious fire in another of his buildings in DUMBO two years ago...
To be continued... pictures to come tonight.
