The Founding of Manhattan, Kansas

A Brief History of Manhattan & Riley County

The early pioneer settlements of Poliska, at the junction of the Kansas River and Wildcat Creek, and Canton, at the base of Bluemont Hill (both in the fall of 1854), joined the New England Emigrant Aid Society and established a town called Boston on April 6, 1855, in the vicinity of present downtown Manhattan.

In June 1855, the Cincinnati & Kansas Land Company was headed up the Kansas River to found a town called Manhattan at the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers. On June 4, 1855, after grounding twice on sand bars near the Boston site, they agreed to join the Bostonians if the town would be renamed Manhattan. A constitution for the new town of Manhattan was adopted on June 29, 1855."

Um... why did they insist on it being called Manhattan?

Schn@ppisms

Last night trying to fall asleep, I thought about the modest slang words/phrases I have coined (or adopted to make my own) in recent years.

For those trying to keep up with the glossary, here is a sampling:

"Reagan" (v.) 1) To suck in an extreme way. (adj.) 2) Something that sucks in an extreme way. "Dude- that sewage treatment plant is totally Reagan!"

"WHAM!" (n.) 1) The West Hudson Area of Midtown (!). Cf. "The Far West Side" and "Hudson Yards."

NYIRoNy (n.) 1) The situation where someone leaves my organization to work at an organization or agency with diametrically-opposed goals to ours. Also used as an adjective- NYIRoNic.

Swish (interj.) 1) An interjection used to point out an ironic situation or highlight a zing. Cf. "Zing".

Zing (interj.) 1) An interjection used to point out an ironic situation or highlight a swish. Cf. "Swish".

I know I'm forgetting some. Help me remember.

Apparently, a member of the electoral college accidentally voted for John Edwards instead of John Kerry. The ballot was also spelled "Ewards".

This is the greatest thing ever

Prime Minister's Question Time

I seriously wish that they did this to P. Bushie. Hard-hitting, rude questions with lots of booing and "here-here!"ing. Sweeet.

Sorry for the lack of posts

Much has happened in the world of Mikebot. Not much blog worthy anyways.

But in the meantime, I give you the official spelling of Brooklyn's only indigenous word:

"Fuhgeddaboudit"

I assure you the context of the link is relevant to why I have to spell it correctly.
