Irony

Who says WNYC is an elitist radio station? They're discussing (+playing) NWA in the context of music sampling. Heh.

Kol Nidre

Tried to go to yom kippur services at NYU, but they were too full for me to get in. Went outside and I saw the Critical Mass bikers getting chased around by police helicopters (!) Definitely one of the more absurd scenes I've seen in NYC. I really don't see why the police care about chasing them.

I've been trying to pick the lock to my bike with a pen ever since this came out. No success- I'm not sure my lock is a kryptonite, since the shell around the straight bar fell off years ago. Hopefully it's secure...

Hardball... on NPR?

These are perhaps the toughest questions a Bush flunkie has faced yet at the hands of an American journalist. Good work, NPR.

Geek, Dweeb, or Spazz? Definitely a Spazz.

Went to Missouri this weekend with the lady. Lots of thoughts to codify about how the Democratic party has abandoned many of the people who need it the most, but in the meantime, I ask you to enjoy my sole piece of culture-jamming that I engaged in while there:

(From the lady)

wheezing with laughter:

how do you placate your hyperactive boyfriend while trying to shop productively for ONLY FOUR THINGS at wal-mart?

New Yorkers: Please Vote Tomorrow

Reposted from the Yankee Rag

It's quite pitiful what our electeds in Albany actually do some of the time. I am ashamed to call them our representatives, because they are in no way representative of the kind of government New York State deserves. A late budget, non-compliance with court orders, little to no oversight of runaway public authorities, routine circumvention of conducting debate in the public eye, an inability to deal with the Medicaid funding timebomb, et cetera. Each failure of the state government to deal with fundamental challenges baffles me and other observers, from left to right.

Many of the current crop of legislators has been in office for more than 20 years. And yet the past 20 years have seen the slow erosion of rent stabilization, the withdrawal of state support for MTA capital projects, the death of the commuter tax, and the unfair saddling of municipalities with Medicaid costs. Much of this is because of the lack of political will and because of the legislative anachronisms highlighted by the recent Brennan Center Report on the NYS legislature.

But I think most of the blame can be laid at the feet of a public that doesn't hold its incumbents accountable. Turnout for local primaries is so pathetic that incumbents have a virtual lock on the nomination and jerrymandering makes the general election results predictable. Therefore, incumbents don't feel vulnerable and challenges fail about 95% of the time. And so people don't turnout. It's a vicious cycle.

I've been thinking about this recently lately because primary elections are upon us tomorrow, Tuesday September 14th. Remember - most lifer incumbents don't want you to vote in this election. It takes about 10 minutes to vote in most polling places, as no one shows up for local primary elections. It is very, very easy. So please vote and make the people heard. I'm voting and there are no competitive races in my district. :-(

If you need to find your polling place please visit the Board of Elections or call 1-866-VOTE-NYC.

Update: The Board of Election's website is overloaded. How convenient.

Readin' Resumes

It is that time again, and I have some awesome excerpts of things you should never put in your cover letter or resume:

"As you can see from my resume, I am currently employed at..."

"As a progress oriented young adult..."

"my work has...involved families who were court involved and so I have been in and out of Family Court."

This is actually a complete sentence in someone's resume: "Provide outreach."

"I am knowledge in Power Point and Microsoft Office and other administrative duties."

"My determined ambition is to improve the system and to convey an assurance to society on the benefits of the system."

"Your organization is truly on the cutting-edge of the new millenium"

"Objective: Seeking a challenging position where my organizational skills and communication skills will add value."
